Christina. This made me cry, for that pigeon, and its partner, as pigeons mate for life, and as you stated, any family. I raised pigeons when I was a kid, and they are beautiful and noble animals, and loyal and far more intelligent than they are credited for being. During the Second World War pigeons were used, dropped out of planes, to get important messages through that would otherwise not make it. Just one example. And your instincts were spot on regarding potential future danger, but certainly regarding the irreconcilable differences between you and your partner. It is beautiful that you both remember and keep this incident in mind, and honor that pigeon’s precious gift to you. Thank you for writing and posting this.
